Monday 11/23: This Daze—"Less About You"
Today, we share our thoughts on a new song by the Trondheim, Norway fuzz-rock band This Daze.
Welcome to Endless Scroll, the brainchild of Eli Enis (he/him) and Eric Bennett (they/them). Since Feb. 2019, we’ve been a weekly podcast about music, the internet, and where those two things intersect. Now we’re, also a M-F newsletter about songs. Our format is simple: a link to a song and a short take from each of us about what we think of it. Each day of the week has a corresponding genre: Monday is indie, Tuesday is punk, Wednesday is hip-hop, Thursday is pop, and Friday is misc.
Today, we share our thoughts on a new song by the Trondheim, Norway fuzz-rock band This Daze.
This Daze—"Less About You"
Eric Bennett:
This song moves at an intense clip, jagged shining guitars cresting and smashing down like waves. The Norwegian band has been churning out singles all year, but “Less About You” feels particularly like a spotlight on their infectious post-punk sensibilities. While the hook and lyrics overall don't get very expansive, they don’t really need to—the song does more with less. This is the kind of track that has me rocking out at my desk chair, and I desperately want to hear more from them soon.
Eli Enis:
This song meets at the crossroads between Cloud Nothings, Dinosaur Jr., and The Strokes. The dejected emo curl in the vocalist’s intonation reminds me of CN’s Dylan Baldi, the stacks of fuzz and searing solo are quintessential Dino Jr., and the whole thing has a brisk garage rock revival sensibility to it that feels Strokes or Hives-adjacent to me. “Less About You” is from an upcoming EP that This Daze are putting out next month, but they already have a few singles on Spotify that find common ground among the references that come through on this track. There’s a lot of redundant fuzz-rock in the world these days, but This Daze’s pep might be their calling card.
