Monday 12/7: Lande Hekt—"Undone"
Today, we share our thoughts on a new song by the Exeter, UK indie-rock artist Lande Hekt.
Welcome to Endless Scroll, the brainchild of Eli Enis (he/him) and Eric Bennett (they/them). Since Feb. 2019, we’ve been a weekly podcast about music, the internet, and where those two things intersect. Now we’re, also a M-F newsletter about songs. Our format is simple: a link to a song and a short take from each of us about what we think of it. Each day of the week has a corresponding genre: Monday is indie, Tuesday is punk, Wednesday is hip-hop, Thursday is pop, and Friday is misc.
Today, we share our thoughts on a new song by the Exeter, UK indie-rock artist Lande Hekt.
Lande Hekt—"Undone"
Eric Bennett:
Just a few weeks into the new year Lande Hekt’s debut solo LP Going to Hell will arrive. Its most recent single, “Undone”, reminds me of a lot of acts I’ve had fond feelings for in the past. Hekt’s voice is powerful, her English accent understated. Despite that, she still sounds vaguely like Daddy Issues’ Jenna Moynihan to my ears. The track opens with a quiet, strummed guitar that quickly evolves into something fuller, more anthemic. Hekt could clearly shine even if “Undone” never opened up into something with catchy riffs and a sing-along chorus, but I’m certainly not mad that it does.
Eli Enis:
“Undone” is a song about pushing past chronic indecisiveness and actually voicing the commitments you’ve been too afraid to make. For Muncie Girls frontperson Lande Hekt, that’s rekindling the magic with a romantic partner, finally kicking a recurring smoking habit, and just not being a miserable downer anymore. I can relate to two of those three things (you’ll have to guess), so I felt a really strong connection to this track from the first verse alone. Then, like Eric said, the music picks up and the hook kicks in and the song becomes an anthem for acknowledging that you’ve lost your way. Given her time in the power-pop group Muncie Girls, it’s no surprise that Hekt knows how to put together an electric rock song given, but here she finds a nice balance between musical and emotional heft.
