Monday 7/20: Angel Du$t—"Never Ending Game"
Today, we share our thoughts on a new track from the Baltimore indie-punks Angel Du$t.
Welcome to Endless Scroll, the brainchild of Eli Enis (he/him) and Eric Bennett (they/them). Since Feb. 2019, we’ve been a weekly podcast about music, the internet, and where those two things intersect. Now we’re, also a M-F newsletter about songs. Our format is simple: a link to a song and a short take from each of us about what we think of it. Each day of the week has a corresponding genre: Monday is indie, Tuesday is punk, Wednesday is hip-hop, Thursday is pop, and Friday is misc.
Today, we share our thoughts on a new track from the Baltimore indie-punks Angel Du$t.
Angel Du$t—"Never Ending Game"
Eli Enis:
If you did a blind listen of the new track from the Baltimore crew Angel Du$t, it'd probably take you upward of one million tries to guess that it's a bunch of gnarly hardcore musicians behind the project. The band is fronted by Trapped Under Ice frontman Justice Tripp and features members of Turnstile, and over the years they’ve gone from making razory pop-punk to straight up bubblegum indie-pop. This new cut from their Rob Schnapf-produced EP is a purely delectable power-pop track with twangy guitar and a drawly country-pop hook. It's like Alex G made by punks whose melodic chops could turn heads in Nashville. Your fav moshcore dudes could never.
Eric Bennett:
The career trajectory of Angel Du$t is honestly fascinating. If you time traveled back to just after their debut and played anything from last year’s Pretty Buff for a fan, they likely wouldn't believe that it was the same band. This is equally true for their new EP Lil House. Its closing track, “Never Ending Game” is a far cry from where they started, with a sound that straddled power pop and hardcore. Instead, the song is twangy and country tinged. Its progression and melody call to mind Oso Oso’s “Impossible Game” if they turned it into a modern country radio hit. It’s a song I could play in the car with my family, and they might like it. That is some of the highest praise I can give.
