Monday 8/31: Hannah Georgas—"Easy"
Today, we share our thoughts on a new song by the Ontario indie-pop songwriter Hannah Georgas.
Welcome to Endless Scroll, the brainchild of Eli Enis (he/him) and Eric Bennett (they/them). Since Feb. 2019, we’ve been a weekly podcast about music, the internet, and where those two things intersect. Now we’re, also a M-F newsletter about songs. Our format is simple: a link to a song and a short take from each of us about what we think of it. Each day of the week has a corresponding genre: Monday is indie, Tuesday is punk, Wednesday is hip-hop, Thursday is pop, and Friday is misc.
Today, we share our thoughts on a new song by the Ontario indie-pop songwriter Hannah Georgas.
Hannah Georgas—“Easy”
Eli Enis:
The latest single from Ontario’s Hannah Georgas is a deceptively tense, pulsating indie-pop song about getting over an ex. The track begins with the steady tick of a lofi drum machine, and even as a watery synth lead and reverb-laden guitar strokes enter the mix, that steady drum remains clacking away in an almost clock-like manner. Georgas is singing about walking by “your favorite place, in a drunken state”, her head swirling with unresolved feelings, only to wake up and feel like she can’t articulate any of her once-swimming thoughts. The second verse is essentially her fast-forwarding to the step where memories begin to fade and you feel like you’re finally healing, but you still fear seeing that person’s face and twinge when someone else mentions their name. Without offering too much color in the lyrics, Georgas is still able to conjure that post-breakup period vividly, and the song’s purposeful pacing translates that arduous process into music. It’s cool.
Eric Bennett:
I’m often skeptical of First Name / Last Name singer-songwriter types, as they so often make up the dregs of my promos inbox. On the occasion I’m able to push past this bad instinct, I almost always find myself quite impressed with the material there. While Hannah Georgas was not an artist sent to me, I fear that my own judgmental nature might have kept me from finding this were it not for Eli putting this on our agenda. “Easy” is the first track off her new LP, and the opening bit of the song has a wonderful glitchy drum machine making up its frame. Georgas’ voice is lovely, really tying together the overall pleasant soundscape on display here. All of this, plus the elegant strings, make the song feel like an intricate trellis; regal yet nurturing.
