Thursday 10/15: Kississippi—"Around Your Room"
Today, we share our thoughts on a new song by the Philadelphia indie-pop artist Kississippi.
Welcome to Endless Scroll, the brainchild of Eli Enis (he/him) and Eric Bennett (they/them). Since Feb. 2019, we’ve been a weekly podcast about music, the internet, and where those two things intersect. Now we’re, also a M-F newsletter about songs. Our format is simple: a link to a song and a short take from each of us about what we think of it. Each day of the week has a corresponding genre: Monday is indie, Tuesday is punk, Wednesday is hip-hop, Thursday is pop, and Friday is misc.
Today, we share our thoughts on a new song by the Philadelphia indie-pop artist Kississippi.
Kississippi—"Around Your Room"
Eric Bennett:
One of the last shows I remember having a truly great time at was Mannequin Pussy’s gig here in Pittsburgh. Kississippi opened, armed with a keytar, and closed their set with modern classic “Dancing On My Own” by Robyn. Since then, I’ve wanted to see the project veer towards straightforward pop, and that moment has finally arrived. “Around Your Room” is a bop, and sounds directly influenced by Taylor Swift, who Reynolds’ voice echoes, and Carly Rae Jepsen. It’s yearning but not self conscious about it. It ultimately makes you want to do as the chorus encourages and dance around your room.
Eli Enis:
It’s Taylor Swift but there’s a twinge of nasally emo in there. The Tom Delonge way of saying “moyyy” instead of “myyy”, if you will. I think that’s Kississippi’s calling card. Big, bombastic pop tracks with a throbbing beat and a gigantic melody that her voice can soar over, but also some jangly guitars and her not being shy about letting her accent shine through. After all, she is a native to pop-punk, emo, and emo-adjacent indie-rock and I think it’s cool to hear that sort of thing in a Big Pop context right now. This song has such an electrifying energy to it and I really think Kississippi has some major crossover potential in her arsenal.
