Tuesday 11/17: Rodeo Boys—"Dog Leg"
Today, we share our thoughts on a new song from the Michigan grunge-punk band Rodeo Boys.
Welcome to Endless Scroll, the brainchild of Eli Enis (he/him) and Eric Bennett (they/them). Since Feb. 2019, we’ve been a weekly podcast about music, the internet, and where those two things intersect. Now we’re, also a M-F newsletter about songs. Our format is simple: a link to a song and a short take from each of us about what we think of it. Each day of the week has a corresponding genre: Monday is indie, Tuesday is punk, Wednesday is hip-hop, Thursday is pop, and Friday is misc.
Today, we share our thoughts on a new song from the Michigan grunge-punk band Rodeo Boys.
Rodeo Boys—"Dog Leg"
Eric Bennett:
It’s a really smart choice for Rodeo Boys to name this song after Dogleg. I’m sure it’s done lovingly, and it definitely draws the eye for those who fell hard for Melee this spring. The song had me in its grasp mere seconds after hitting play. Rough, grungy guitars that flail about, and tough vocals to match. It’s catchy as hell, and short enough that you really need to listen through a few times to feel satiated. There hasn’t been a shortage of fuzz rock, but it’s been a while since I’ve heard some that feels this fun. Now, along with the song's namesake, there are two things called “Dogleg” I desperately need to see live when concert return someday.
Eli Enis:
Rodeo Boys may be shouting out their Michigan comrades in the title, but this song is way more of a grunge-punk stomper than a ragged emo burner. Vocalist Tiffany Hannay has a real dusky howl that they let crackle into tattered yelps, which is a nice change of pace from the sugary grunge that’s proliferated among their contemporaries. The song has a fascinating twinge of death-rock to it—a smoky, midnight twang that affirms their moniker isn’t twee irony but an actual appreciation of sounds from the American south. You can hear it in the blazing guitar solo, the whammy-barred chord between the hook and verse, and in Hannay’s pained wail. Shit rips.
