Wednesday 1/20: YN Jay—"Coochie In Class"
Today, we examine YN Jay’s “Coochie In Class” by creating a syllabus for the Michigan rapper.
Welcome to Endless Scroll, the brainchild of Eli Enis (he/him) and Eric Bennett (they/them). Since Feb. 2019, we’ve been a weekly podcast about music, the internet, and where those two things intersect. Now we’re, also a M-F newsletter about songs. Our format is simple: a link to a song and a short take from each of us about what we think of it. Each day of the week has a corresponding genre: Monday is indie, Tuesday is punk, Wednesday is hip-hop, Thursday is pop, and Friday is misc.
Today, we examine YN Jay’s “Coochie In Class” by creating a syllabus for the Michigan rapper.

Course Description/Overview
This course is designed to familiarize students with Flint, Michigan rapper YN Jay and serve as an introduction to his strange world of music. Looking back to 2020 where songs like “Coochie” and “Doonie Van” became viral hits, students will be asked to dive deep into YN Jay’s many references to coochie and explore the cultural impact of his singular style.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course students should be able to identify how YN Jay switches up his flow on tracks like “Coochie In Class” without sacrificing any of the coochie mythology of his previous work. Similarly, students should be able to recite lines such as “Sippin’ the lean while I’m driving, I hope I don’t crash/Run from the police, I don’t got no tags” from memory by the end of the semester.

Grading
This course will be graded by just four different types of assignments. 25% of your grade will come from weekly Genius annotations for YN Jay songs, which are due promptly at the beginning of each class.
The next 25% will come from a 15-page dissertation about YN Jay’s obsession with “the coochie”. The guidelines for this assignment are purposefully vague because I want you, curious students, to soak in all of YN Jay’s material and come away with your own argument for why the coochie matters—why the coochie is significant.
The midterm constitutes the next quarter of your grade. Students will be given three hours to complete 100 multiple choice questions, all of which are fill-in-the-blanks for various lines throughout YN Jay’s six-project discography. Since he’ll likely put out new music during the semester of this class, bonus points will be awarded to anyone who gets up to the front of the class and a capella’s a verse from any of his latest songs.
Lastly, the remaining 25% will come from your final exam, which is not a test, essay, or traditional project. Instead, in order to pass this class, do as YN Jay says in “Coochie In Class” and successfully have sex in the back of the classroom while class is in session. “Like, in the back of the classroom? / Like, while everybody was doin' their work and–like, while the teacher was teaching?” Yes. Find someone, they don’t even have to be from this class, and make it happen.
